• Intern Hackday 2015: Eat. Hack. Sleep

Register for Intern Hackday 2015

LinkedIn’s annual intern hackday competition is on Friday, July 17th to Saturday, July 18th, 2015. Teams will have the opportunity to create any project while LinkedIn provides a world-class hackday experience. The theme for this year’s event is “The Lego Movie.” As a participant of the hackathon, you’ll have a chance to build an awesome product by leveraging the “building blocks” available to you (Javascript, HTML, CSS, Java, etc.). You’re only limited by your imagination!

Registration will be open to all Bay Area interns who are currently employed by a tech company. There is no registration fee.

Whether you are a computer guru, designer, or entrepreneur, you are invited to attend this event. Each group should have a good balance of talent, so your skills are needed!

We look forward to hosting the best and brightest interns in Silicon Valley.

What is a hackday?

This is a chance for you to to turn something you are passionate about into a working prototype of your idea - otherwise known as a "hack." In just 24 hours you’ll have opportunity to build apps, compete for cool prizes, get LinkedIn swag, and network with fellow interns from a number of tech companies. You may work in teams or as an individual.

When is it all happening?

The hackday runs from 6:00pm on Friday, July 17 to 5:30pm on Saturday, July 18, 2015.

Who is eligible?

Interns in the Bay Area who are currently employed in a software engineering, design, or technical product/program management related role at a tech company. All applicants must be currently enrolled in a full time degree program (Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD) and returning to the program after the completion of their internship.

Once you register, we will get back to you on the status of your application within 3-4 business days.

Each participant is required to register individually, however, team registration will take place onsite. You are encouraged to form your own teams, but please note that there is a limit of 5 interns per team.

What kind of hacks are allowed?

Just about anything that will 'wow' the judges is fair game: web apps, mobile apps, desktop apps, data analytics, games, tools, frameworks, optimizations, and so on. Just keep it appropriate and legal and we'll be happy.

Finally, the hack does NOT have to be related to LinkedIn or “The Lego Movie” in any way. However, if you do need LinkedIn data for something, check out our APIs.

Are there prizes?

First Place - $10K scholarship (to be split among the team)

Second Place - 1 iPad Air per team member

Third Place - 1 $150 Amazon gift card per team member

In addition, all finalists (top 10-15 teams from preliminary judging) will receive a copy of “The Lego Movie.”

Judging criteria

Projects will be evaluated on the following criteria (each out of 5 points):

  1. Brilliant Idea: Impact & Innovation (Up to 5 points)

  2. Technical Wizardry: Working hacks, not slide decks (Up to 5 points)

  3. User Experience: Polish, shine, and wow factor (Up to 5 points)

  4. The Pitch: Presentation Skills (Up to 5 points)

A total of 20 points possible.

Judging process

  1. For the preliminary judging the hacks created will be broken up into groups. Each group will consist of 10-12 teams and each team will be evaluated on the judging criteria by our preliminary judges. Each team will get 2 minutes to demo their project, followed by a minute for Q&A. The judges for this round will be LinkedIn employees.
  2. Final Judging: The top 10-15 teams from preliminary judging will then present to our final judges (Judges TBD). The format will be the same as the preliminary judging.
